Paribesh Unnayan Parishad (PUPA) is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, dedicated to environmental conservation and the integrated development of rural communities across West Bengal since 1994.
Over three decades, we have worked with thousands of families, farmers, women, youth, and students — building resilient communities that live in harmony with their natural environment. Our holistic approach bridges ecology, livelihoods, and education.

01 — RESEARCH CENTRE
Krishna-Suchitra Memorial Centre
Our rural development and research hub on Sagar Island, anchoring everything else we do.
02 — SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION
Wipro Earthian Programme
Delivered through CEE, Ahmedabad (2018–2019), reaching about 75 schools across West Bengal with school-based sustainability education.
03 — TRADITIONAL PADDY & FARMING
Salt-Tolerant Paddy Conservation
In-situ conservation of traditional, salt-resistant paddy varieties for food security in the salt-affected Sundarbans.
Three decades on the delta
From a rural research centre on Sagar Island to statewide sustainability education, our work is organised around three pillars: learning, conservation and resilient livelihoods.
1992
A group of ZSI scientists, led by founder-secretary Dr. Amales Misra, begin environmental education work in Kolkata schools.
1994
PUPA's school programme takes root at Sakhawat Memorial Govt. Girls' High School, running for 6–7 years and later expanding to 16 schools across Kolkata and 24 Parganas.
2007
"Amar Gram" launches in Phulbari, Sagar Island — Dr. Misra's birthplace — with UNDP support, encouraging children to sustainably harness local bio-resources.
2010
Dr. Santanu Mitra establishes the Krishna-Suchitra Memorial Centre for Rural Development & Research, including an informal study centre for 16 underprivileged children.
2016-20
A science lab opens with support from Zee Bangla; the Wipro Earthian programme reaches 75+ schools; PUPA receives the State DST Meghnad Award (2020).
